Tricks for the 5 times table

Pick the trick that clicks for you. Each one is a different way to the same answer.

Half of the 10s

Five is half of ten, so every answer in the 5 times table is half the 10 times answer.

10 × 8 = 80, so 5 × 8 = 40

Ends in 5 or 0

Every answer in the 5 times table ends in 5 or 0: odd numbers give a 5, even numbers give a 0.

5, 10, 15, 20, 25

Use the table before

Know the 4 times table? Add one more lot: 5 × 7 is 4 × 7 plus 7.

28 + 7 = 35

Turn it around

5 × 3 is the same as 3 × 5. If you know the 3 times table, you already know this fact, and the same goes for every table you have learned.

3 × 5 = 5 × 3 = 15

Count in 5s

Each answer is 5 more than the one before, so you can always count on from a fact you know.

5, 10, 15, 20, 25

The square fact

5 × 5 = 25 is a square number: 5 rows of 5 make a perfect square. Square facts are good anchors to work from.

5 × 5 = 25

Worked examples

How each answer is found, step by step.

5 × 6

Work out 10 × 6 = 60, then halve it: 60 ÷ 2 = 30.

5 × 6 = 60 ÷ 2 = 30

7 × 5

The order does not matter: 7 × 5 is the same as 5 × 7. Work out 10 × 7 = 70, then halve it: 70 ÷ 2 = 35.

7 × 5 = 35

5 × 12

Work out 10 × 12 = 120, then halve it: 120 ÷ 2 = 60.

5 × 12 = 120 ÷ 2 = 60

5 × 17

Work out 10 × 17 = 170, then halve it: 170 ÷ 2 = 85.

5 × 17 = 170 ÷ 2 = 85

40 ÷ 5

Ask how many 5s make 40. You know 5 × 8 = 40, so the answer is 8.

40 ÷ 5 = 8

5 × ? = 70

Ask how many 5s make 70. Divide to find it: 70 ÷ 5 = 14.

5 × 14 = 70
