Tricks for the 20 times table

Pick the trick that clicks for you. Each one is a different way to the same answer.

Use the 2s, add a zero

20 is 2 tens, so work out the 2s answer and write a zero on the end.

20 × 7 = 14 × 10 = 140

Double the 10s

20 is double 10, so work out the 10 times table answer and double it.

10 × 7 = 70, so 20 × 7 = 140

Use the table before

Know the 19 times table? Add one more lot: 20 × 7 is 19 × 7 plus 7.

133 + 7 = 140

Every answer is even

Every answer in the 20 times table is an even number, so it ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8. An odd answer is always a mistake.

20, 40, 60, 80, 100

Turn it around

20 × 3 is the same as 3 × 20. If you know the 3 times table, you already know this fact, and the same goes for every table you have learned.

3 × 20 = 20 × 3 = 60

Count in 20s

Each answer is 20 more than the one before, so you can always count on from a fact you know.

20, 40, 60, 80, 100

Worked examples

How each answer is found, step by step.

20 × 6

Work out 2 × 6 = 12, then add a zero: 120.

20 × 6 = 12 × 10 = 120

7 × 20

The order does not matter: 7 × 20 is the same as 20 × 7. Work out 2 × 7 = 14, then add a zero: 140.

7 × 20 = 140

20 × 12

Work out 2 × 12 = 24, then add a zero: 240.

20 × 12 = 24 × 10 = 240

20 × 17

Work out 2 × 17 = 34, then add a zero: 340.

20 × 17 = 34 × 10 = 340

160 ÷ 20

Ask how many 20s make 160. You know 20 × 8 = 160, so the answer is 8.

160 ÷ 20 = 8

20 × ? = 280

Ask how many 20s make 280. Divide to find it: 280 ÷ 20 = 14.

20 × 14 = 280

Say each answer out loud before you open it. If you get all ten, try the 60-second test above.

1. What is 20 × 8?
160. Eight lots of 20.
2. What number times 20 makes 100?
5. 100 ÷ 20 = 5.
3. Is 20 × 11 = 221?
No, it is 220. 20 × 10 = 200 is a good place to start, then add one more 20.

8. Which is bigger: 20 × 9 or 9 × 21?
9 × 21 = 189. It is bigger than 20 × 9 = 180 by exactly 9.
9. What comes next: 120, 140, 160, …?
180. Counting in 20s, each step adds 20.
10. If 20 × k = 320, what is k?
16. 320 ÷ 20 = 16.
