Tricks for the 16 times table

Pick the trick that clicks for you. Each one is a different way to the same answer.

Double the 8s

16 is double 8, so work out the 8s answer and double it.

16 × 7 = 2 × 56 = 112

Use the table before

Know the 15 times table? Add one more lot: 16 × 7 is 15 × 7 plus 7.

105 + 7 = 112

Every answer is even

Every answer in the 16 times table is an even number, so it ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8. An odd answer is always a mistake.

16, 32, 48, 64, 80

The last digits repeat

Look at the last digit of each answer from 16 × 1 to 16 × 10. The same pattern repeats for the next ten answers, so learn it once.

6, 2, 8, 4, 0, 6, 2, 8, 4, 0

Turn it around

16 × 3 is the same as 3 × 16. If you know the 3 times table, you already know this fact, and the same goes for every table you have learned.

3 × 16 = 16 × 3 = 48

Count in 16s

Each answer is 16 more than the one before, so you can always count on from a fact you know.

16, 32, 48, 64, 80

Worked examples

How each answer is found, step by step.

16 × 6

Work out 8 × 6 = 48, then double it: 48 + 48 = 96.

16 × 6 = 2 × 48 = 96

7 × 16

The order does not matter: 7 × 16 is the same as 16 × 7. Work out 8 × 7 = 56, then double it: 56 + 56 = 112.

7 × 16 = 112

16 × 12

Work out 8 × 12 = 96, then double it: 96 + 96 = 192.

16 × 12 = 2 × 96 = 192

16 × 17

Work out 8 × 17 = 136, then double it: 136 + 136 = 272.

16 × 17 = 2 × 136 = 272

128 ÷ 16

Ask how many 16s make 128. You know 16 × 8 = 128, so the answer is 8.

128 ÷ 16 = 8

16 × ? = 224

Ask how many 16s make 224. Divide to find it: 224 ÷ 16 = 14.

16 × 14 = 224
