Know the 3 times table? Add one more lot: 4 × 7 is 3 × 7 plus 7.

Every answer in the 4 times table is an even number, so it ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8. An odd answer is always a mistake.

Look at the last digit of each answer from 4 × 1 to 4 × 10. The same pattern repeats for the next ten answers, so learn it once.

4 × 3 is the same as 3 × 4. If you know the 3 times table, you already know this fact, and the same goes for every table you have learned.
3 × 4 = 4 × 3 = 12
Each answer is 4 more than the one before, so you can always count on from a fact you know.

Double 6 to get 12, then double again to get 24.
The order does not matter: 7 × 4 is the same as 4 × 7. Double 7 to get 14, then double again to get 28.
Double 12 to get 24, then double again to get 48.
Double 17 to get 34, then double again to get 68.
Ask how many 4s make 32. You know 4 × 8 = 32, so the answer is 8.
Ask how many 4s make 56. Divide to find it: 56 ÷ 4 = 14.
