Tricks for the 2 times table

Pick the trick that clicks for you. Each one is a different way to the same answer.

Just double it

The 2 times table is doubling. Add the number to itself and you have the answer.

2 × 8 = 8 + 8 = 16

Every answer is even

Every answer in the 2 times table is an even number, so it ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8. An odd answer is always a mistake.

2, 4, 6, 8, 10

The last digits repeat

Look at the last digit of each answer from 2 × 1 to 2 × 10. The same pattern repeats for the next ten answers, so learn it once.

2, 4, 6, 8, 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 0

Turn it around

2 × 3 is the same as 3 × 2. If you know the 3 times table, you already know this fact, and the same goes for every table you have learned.

3 × 2 = 2 × 3 = 6

Count in 2s

Each answer is 2 more than the one before, so you can always count on from a fact you know.

2, 4, 6, 8, 10

The square fact

2 × 2 = 4 is a square number: 2 rows of 2 make a perfect square. Square facts are good anchors to work from.

2 × 2 = 4

Worked examples

How each answer is found, step by step.

2 × 6

Times 2 means doubling: 6 + 6 = 12.

2 × 6 = 6 + 6 = 12

7 × 2

The order does not matter: 7 × 2 is the same as 2 × 7. Times 2 means doubling: 7 + 7 = 14.

7 × 2 = 14

2 × 12

Times 2 means doubling: 12 + 12 = 24.

2 × 12 = 12 + 12 = 24

2 × 17

Times 2 means doubling: 17 + 17 = 34.

2 × 17 = 17 + 17 = 34

16 ÷ 2

Ask how many 2s make 16. You know 2 × 8 = 16, so the answer is 8.

16 ÷ 2 = 8

2 × ? = 28

Ask how many 2s make 28. Divide to find it: 28 ÷ 2 = 14.

2 × 14 = 28
